In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Miller admitted to killing an 18-year-old in 1965 when he was 16. While spending some time in prison for the crime, he said he still deeply regretted that the shooting “was not without reason” .
“I mean, there was no good reason for that to happen. And that’s what I’m really struggling with, and that’s… you know, that’s what I think about every day, “he said. “It was as if I had done this to someone who had no reason to do so. And that’s the part that really worries me.

The shooting came as Miller and other members of the Cedar Avenue gang in West Philadelphia sought revenge after one of their own was killed in a battle by a rival gang. Miller says he shot the first person he came across and his gang colleagues, an 18-year-old man later identified as Edward White.
“We were all drunk,” Miller told the magazine that night. “I was in a fog. When I started something, I said to myself, “Oh, shit, what did I do?” It took me years to figure out the real impact of what I did. “
Miller hopes his story can help young people at risk and people in prison.
“If I could go back and cancel it, I would absolutely do it,” he said. “I can’t. So all I can do is try to do what I can to help other people and try to prevent that from happening to someone else.”
Regarding informing his colleagues from Jordan Brand and the NBA about his past crime, Miller said he was extremely nervous.
“I was definitely nervous to share with him just because I have so much respect and love for MJ,” he said, telling Michael Jordan. But Miller was “struck by how positive the response was,” he said, adding that it was “liberating.”
Miller co-authored his memoirs with his eldest daughter, Layla and is scheduled for release in early 2022. He says he is open to his past to circumvent any leaks about what he did before the book was published. “It was a really difficult decision for me,” Miller said, “because I’ve been running away from it for 40 years. I tried to hide it and I hope people don’t find out about it. “
He has built a successful career with companies such as Campbell Soup, Kraft Foods, Portland Trailblazers, where he was team president, Nike, and is now chairman of the Jordan brand, according to SI. But he also experienced migraines and nightmares that left him for years and even hospitalized him.
