Hispanics are the fastest growing demographic in the United States, and the number of people who identify as African-Latinos in the 2020 census is over 1.3 million. Each state and county in Columbia is experiencing growth among demographics, and for the first time in the country, births rather than immigration are drivers of the increase.
Unfortunately, some who identify as black and Latin say that as the community grows, the overall sense of acceptance is not. In fact, many feel like they are between cultures and are not invited to cook. Speaking Spanish, especially at home, makes some people feel like they’re not “really black.” Then, when these same people are among the Spanish-speaking people, anti-blackness, even if it is not malicious, can be harmful. Jokes about being dark-skinned, and comments about lightening the bloodline through marriage to provide a greater chance of social mobility, are common, but no less unwelcome than people forced to endure such “advice.” .

In the latest episode of Red Table Talk: Estefanite , which premieres on Thursday (October 14) from 9:00 a.m. / 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Facebook Watch, things get hotter when the topic of colorism appears in the Latinx community and a group of guests are not afraid to go there.

La Negra is extremely vocal for her experiences, especially for the racism she experiences as a little star on the set of Sábado Gigante, a popular Spanish-language pop show. Today, she will be happy to educate anyone who listens to what it’s like to be an Afro-Latin, while Brown has only recently felt comfortable accepting her Latin roots because of the negative responses she once encountered from a beloved family member as a child.

Dr. Elizabeth Hordge-Freeman, a colorist expert in Latin American countries, was also invited to the interview and helped the panel further understand the differences between race, nationality and ethnicity.
As a result of recent events that have challenged racism and white privileges across the country and the world, the Latinx community is just one group in which members are beginning to confront anti-black racism among themselves and in their families.
