Jack Dorsey Square is already blocked

It’s Jack Dorsey not a fan of Mark Zuckerberg. He said once Rolling Stonee. that at a dinner at Chez Zuck the CEO of Facebook served him a goat he had killed and the meat was cold. Most recently, he mocked Zuckerberg’s meta-universal ambitions. However, unintentionally, today the CEO of Square turns out to be making a similar move by the social media mogul, who changed the name of Facebook to Meta just five weeks ago.

The square is now Block. Got it? Blocking.

Just as Meta kept Facebook’s name for its flagship product, Block will continue to use Square for its “reseller” business, which includes payment systems and merchant banking products. The new name, which comes into effect today – the 12th anniversary of Square’s launch – reflects the company’s broader business scope, which now includes the Cash App, the Tidal music service and the nascent crypto-based open platform for call developers TBD54566975.

In a statement announcing the switch, Block marveled at the connotations contained in his new nickname: “Building blocks, neighborhood blocks and their local businesses, communities that gather at block parties full of music, blockchain, part of code and obstacles to overcome. ” Buried in the middle of this list is the one that most likely led to the change: the blockchain. Square, and Dorsey in particular, embraced the crypto revolution, almost to the point of having a sticker on their products labeled “Bitcoin Inside.” (By the way, the company’s Square Crypto division will now be called Spiral, although the company has not provided a similar list of word associations for this.)

Here’s another language feature: Just like Alphabet, which made a similar move when it changed its name from Google and called its various businesses “bets,” Block will call its divisions “building blocks.”

Block says everything else in the company will be the same, with employees committed to everything they’ve done before, except for new email addresses. The new corporate website will have block.xyz; the seemingly preferred block.com seems to belong to a stealth cryptocurrency company. Currently, the company’s NYSE SQ symbol will remain unchanged.
