A traffic stop on May 13, 2019 by a Louisiana police officer left a black driver with a broken jaw, ribs, wrist and head requiring six braces.
Former US police officer Jacob Brown, 31, was charged Thursday (September 23rd) by a grand jury with one count of disqualification under the law, according to Associated Press. The footage was kept secret for more than two years, and state police did not investigate the attack on Bowman until 536 after the incident, but only after Bowman filed a civil lawsuit.
“I always thought I was going to die that night,” Bowman told the AP in an interview with tears in his face. “It was like experiencing it again. Looking at him, I broke again. “
State police said in a statement in August that Bowman “was involved in excessive and unjustified actions.” Police say he did not report the use of force to his supervisor and “deliberately mislabeled” footage recorded on the body’s camera.
Less than three weeks before Bowman’s attack near his home, another black driver, Ronald Green, died in police custody at a “rural roadside” in northeastern Louisiana. It’s only 20 miles from Bowman’s tragic encounter. In parallel with Bowman’s attack, the video of Green’s death was swept under the rug for two years before the examination.
Prior to his resignation in March, former U.S. police officer Brown had a total of 23 violent incidents dating back to 2015. According to state police, 19 of them were aimed at blacks.

In the last decade, there have been more than a dozen cases in which soldiers or their bosses have ignored or concealed evidence of beatings, according to AP investigation. The results of Luciana’s state police show that 67 percent of the force was used against black people. Civil rights groups called the US Department of Justice, urging them to launch a “model and practice” check for potential racial profiling.
State Police Chief Lamar Davis said he welcomed the idea of an investigation if the department considered it a necessary step. But first, Davis wants the department to be able to work on the issues; he states that they have already started working on this issue.
“The department has previously acknowledged that it has launched an ongoing criminal investigation into incidents involving Louisiana state police that resulted in the deaths or injuries of those arrested,” the U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement.
Bowman’s lawyer, Donesia Banks-Miley, called the accusation a “sigh of relief.”
If convicted, Brown faces up to a decade in prison on federal charges alone.
