November 25, 2021 – The three major automakers and United Auto Workers say union workers will not be required to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
A statement from the joint working group on COVID-19 of UAW, Ford, General Motors and Chrysler’s parent company, Stellantis, said workers were encouraged but not required to be vaccinated.
“In addition to encouraging members to disclose their vaccination status, the Working Party continues to call on all members, colleagues and their families to be vaccinated and to receive booster vaccines against COVID-19, while realizing that there are personal reasons that may prevent certain members from being vaccinated, such as health problems or religious beliefs, “the statement said.
Masking will still be required in the workplace.
“Although it is understood that masks can be uncomfortable, the spread of the Delta variant and the latest data outlining the continuing high transmission rate in some geographical areas continue to be a serious health threat,” the statement said.
The position of car workers and car companies contradicts the Biden administration, which wants companies with more than 100 employees to impose vaccinations.
This policy has been suspended while facing legal challenges that are likely to reach the US Supreme Court.
The UAW has more than 400,000 active members and 580,000 retired members in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
Last week, Stellantis ordered non-union workers on U.S. pay to disclose vaccination status by Dec. 4 and be fully vaccinated by Jan. 5, The Detroit News reported. Ford has issued a similar mandate for “most” paid workers. General Motors has not yet established a payroll mandate for its U.S. workforce.
All three car companies have mandated vaccines for car workers in Canada.
