On September 19, human remains, quickly identified as belonging to Petito, were found in the Wyoming Bridger-Teton National Forest, near the Spread Creek site. Following an autopsy, a Teton County investigator identified her death as murder.
A Louisiana couple told CNN a few days after they confirmed that Petito was dead, that they had seen a “commotion” between the young woman and the Merry Piglets Tex-Mex laundry in Jackson, Wyatt, on August 27. and Landry, looking angry, got up from their table and went in and out of the restaurant several times. “We thought they might have gone out on foot or just chilled inside,” Kyle told CNN.
The last text Schmidt received from his daughter’s phone on August 27 read, “Can you help Stan, I just keep getting his voicemails and missed calls.” Stan is Petito’s grandfather, Schmid said, but she didn’t call him that.
