In the past month, bomb threats have disrupted lives at historic black universities and colleges in the United States. Unfortunately, students and faculty at HBCU on at least 13 campuses began Month of Black History with the looming fear of such threats. This is the third time since January 5 that many HBCUs have received notifications.
According to CNN, the list of endangered schools includes: Kopin State University, Mississippi State University, Morgan State University, Alcorne State University, Tugalu College, Jackson State University, Jackson State University, Kentucky State University, Fort Wally State University, University University, University of Hau District of Columbia, Spelman College and Edward Waters University.
Several schools immediately closed their campuses, advising students to take shelter on site or in their dormitory rooms. Others moved classes online for the day while threats were assessed. Many of the threats came early in the morning. Jackson State University tweeted that they received the threat at 4:15 a.m. local time. Howard University said via Twitter that the threat came at 2:55 a.m. local time. The University of Columbia received its 3:20 a.m. local time.
Campus life is slowly resuming as HBCU provides updates. No explosions or bomb finds have been reported so far.
Just yesterday, six HBCUs, including Howard University, reported bomb threats. The unidentified culprit (s) went to Howard University three times a month. Additional schools listed were: Southern University and A&M, Bethune-Kukman University, Albany State University, Bowie State University and Delaware State University. Each school closed its campus and shut down the university. However, authorities did not report the discovery or explosion of bombs in any of the HBCU.
