The island, inspired by the 60’s in “Deathloop”, deserves a closer look

“Tarantino is another influence,” Mitton said. “He covered the 60’s and has these incredibly colorful, impressive characters. The aesthetics are so simple and we remember all these scenes and characters. Other films may be a little muddy. From Deathloop everything is memorable, I thought it was good support. To advance in history, you must remember and you must transfer your memories from one cycle to the next. So that simplicity was important. We didn’t want a complicated game, visually speaking, with too many things. ”

Islands of isolation

Deathloop‘s island is a strange mix of modernist architecture, Scottish stone castles – which will look familiar to visitors to Dunwell from Arkane’s previous game Dishonest– and a strict landscape without trees. At the top of the Faroe Islands, which Arkan mentioned in a preview, Mitton tells me that they wanted to capture the isolated landscapes of Northern Scotland (as shown in this short film by Scottish cyclist legend Danny Macaskill). “At the same time, we were looking at other places with a cold environment. Mostly around the two poles, ”explains Mitton. “Obviously I can’t just buy plane tickets, so I would go to Google Earth and use Street View to walk around.”

Several places stand out from Mitton, such as the Falkland Islands near Argentina. “The structure of the mountains there is astounding. It is very deserted, without trees and not very attractive. There were also places in the northern part of Russia – gas stations that are extremely deserted and need a whole week to travel there. There are even some cities built in the 60s there. They almost look like something from Half-life 2. You have all these shops and casinos in them, because when you go there, it’s for a whole year, and planes and boats don’t come and go. ”

Arkan wanted to capture this idea of an extremely isolated but relatively built-up settlement. In addition to a share of villain’s dens, concrete bunkers and secret labs, Blackreef has its own entertainment complex, rooftop bar and even a plush, renovated castle that comes with a dance floor and a comedy club. He also crawls with hedonistic eternalists, heroes who want to make the most of the repetitive time cycle by organizing an eternal party loaded with hallucinogens.

“It’s like in the movie The thing“Events happen far from the rest of the world, and you’re focused only on what’s happening there,” Mitton said. “We wanted to put things in a place where no one would want to go on vacation, and then build our science fiction and storytelling on top of everything.”

The color of architecture

In terms of architecture, Deathloop builds on what Arkane starts with Dishonest. “Our goal with Dunwall was to make it very cold and dark,” says Mitton. „С Deathloop, we wanted to compare this with the 60’s and with the color. The color began to appear on the walls, the interior, the NPC of the island. This is a kind of their inner life; they want to live eternal life and have this eternal party.

“Every day will be a party, you can kill people or die, and it doesn’t matter. Everything is very carefree and we wanted it to be obvious. So we painted whole buildings, a bit like some of the pubs you see in England, which can be quite graphic. There is also the movie High Plains Drifter, with Clint Eastwood. There is a scene in which he comes to defend a village and everything in the village is painted red, right in the middle of the desert. It’s really beautiful and we thought, let’s continue like this! ”
