At the end of the soup season, health officials warn American customers to stay away from onions. Apparently, more than 600 people in the United States became ill with salmonella after eating several types of imported onions. According to a press release, the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating the outbreak.
So far, officials have confirmed 652 Salmonella Oranienburg infections in 37 states. These cases led to 129 hospitalizations, but no deaths were reported.
“Throw away any undescribed onions at home,” the CDC tweeted on Wednesday. “Do not eat, sell or serve red, white or yellow onions imported from Mexico and distributed in the United States by ProSource Inc.”

Characters to look for
The CDC also warned that the number of people suffering from salmonella from onions could be higher. Also, the list of countries affected may be longer, but they rely on currently reported cases. The CDC revealed that “many people are recovering without medical help and have not been tested for salmonella.”
However, the infection can cause “diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps”. Severe cases lead to “fever, pain, headache, lethargy, rash, blood in the urine or stool”. The CDC says about 420 deaths occur each year in the United States from salmonella.

Which onion?
The investigation focused on onions imported and used between July 1 and August 27. ProSource Inc. agreed to withdraw “red, yellow and white onions imported from the state of Chihuahua, Mexico” between those dates. Infected onions include “jumbo, colossal, medium and sweet onions”.
Health officials hope to curb infections by warning the public at the start of the investigation.
“We are releasing this update at the beginning of our investigation as part of our ongoing commitment to transparency and early communication,” a press release said. “We will provide updates as we learn more during our ongoing investigation, especially if there are updates to this important public health council.”
