In an interview with Todayshe shared the initial thoughts she had towards her father while growing up, and she shared what she has learned as a parent herself, and the reason behind her father’s absence.

Kelly shared that after her mother passed, three weeks after the birth of her son Titanium, she thought to herself that she didn’t have any other parents left until she remembered that she still had her dad. “I said,‘ I really need to know him. I want to meet him, ”Kelly said.

While reviewing their conversation after meeting up, Kelly said she learned about her father’s relationship with his father, and her grandfather’s relationship with his father, and said, “He was doing the best he could, with what he had,” Kelly said. “How can one learn how to be something when they weren’t taught?”

Kelly added, “I learned that we are not perfect, and it broke my heart to know there’s going to be something about me that my kid is going to be disappointed about. Something, you don’t do it intentionally of course. ”

Kelly was joined by her father as she spoke with Hoda Kotb and he shared that he loves Kelly and that he had never given her up. He also explained that when she and her mother had left Atlanta, he didn’t even know that they had moved. Kelly explained that her mother was a nanny, and her job moved her to Houston, and her father didn’t know that she had left.

When asked what it was like to hear her father say “I love you,” an emotional Kelly said, “It was necessary to the little girl in me that needed to hear that. It was necessary to hear it from a man, it was necessary to hear it from my father. ”
