On Saturday, a gang abducted at least 16 American and Canadian missionaries while they were at an airport in Haiti on their way home.
The kidnappers now want $ 1 million each before being released, Haitian Justice Minister Liszt Quitel told CNN.
The missionaries were abducted by the powerful 400 Mawozo gang on Saturday after visiting an orphanage in Croix-des-Bouquets, a northeastern suburb of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
USA Today also reports that protests are being held on behalf of the abducted missionaries.
The protest also reportedly stopped businesses, schools and public transport.
As previously reported, the Ohio-based Ministry of Christian Aid confirmed in a statement that a group of 17 people were “kidnapped” while traveling to an orphanage on Saturday.
“We want an urgent prayer for the group of Christian Aid ministry officials abducted during a trip to visit an orphanage on Saturday, October 16,” the statement said on Sunday. “We are looking for God’s guidance for a solution and the authorities are looking for ways to help.
The gang is also accused of kidnapping five priests and two nuns earlier this year, according to the Associated Press.
Among those abducted were “an 8-month-old baby and children aged 3, 6, 14 and 15,” CNN reported.
According to the source, two French priests were also abducted in a separate attack on the same place earlier in the day. The Haitian government suspects that the gang, known as 400 Mawozo, is behind the abductions.
CNN also reported that the 400 Mawozo gang had up to 150 members and “essentially took control of the Croix des Bouquets.”
