Police in St. Petersburg on Wednesday (October 13th) charged a man who was already behind bars in connection with the death of a 35-year-old woman with the murder of a second woman.

Ken Knight, a spokesman for the St. Petersburg police department, said investigators did not believe the shootings were linked and that no woman was the target of the accused shooter. Tyrone Jakassal, 21, according to Tampa Bay Times.

There were striking similarities in the two tragic cases. Jakassal is said to have shot at the victims, both mothers of two children while sitting in cars.

Jakassal was arrested shortly after the alleged murder K’Mia Simmons, 21, on 30 March. Days later, police said he shot deadly Emily Grot. DNA evidence links him to the first murder.

The suspect has been held in Pinelas County Jail without bail since police arrested him on April 5 for killing Simmons.

With this new arrest, he faces two counts of second-degree murder in both shootings.

According to police, Grot was sitting in the passenger seat of a car in a parking lot when Jakassal fired at the back passenger door around 10:50 p.m. The bullet penetrated the door and hit Grot in the back. The forensic analysis of 9 mm pistol shells at the scene coincides with the DNA profile of Jakassal.

In the other shooting, Simmons was holding her child at 1 in a Volvo when Jakassal fired at the vehicle, police said. At the time, her 2-year-old was sitting in the back seat. Investigators believe the father of the younger child was the target of Jakassal, who was an accomplice of another man Jakassal shot and robbed in March.
