Bob Biswas, the killer of everyone, was one of Sujoy Ghosh’s most interesting characters in Kahaani (2012). Nine years later, his daughter, Dia Annapurna Ghosh, celebrated her directorial debut with a Kahaani spin-off, with Bob Biswas as the central character. Bob was played by Sasuata Chatterjee with great enthusiasm in the original, but here the creators have replaced Saswata with Abhishek Bachchan. The killer has been in a coma for the past eight years. He wakes up without a memory of who he was. We learned that he has a beautiful wife, Mary Bivas (Chitrangada Singh), a teenage daughter, Mini (Samara Tijori), and a son, Benny (Ronit Arora), as a teenager. The daughter is from Mary’s previous marriage. Mini wants to become a doctor, and because of the pressure of the exam, she became addicted to a drug called Blue, which is a large, button-like, blue tablet. The tablets increase concentration and help them stay awake all night. This is part of the story. The other part involves two government agents who prepare Bob to become a murderer again, this time ostensibly for the good boys. He doesn’t remember who he is, but he has enough muscular memory to assemble an automatic revolver and aim and fire with an unmistakable aim. Another part includes a secret society or murderers and their aides, a la John Wick. Its main members are Dhonu (Pabitra Rabna), an Indo-Chinese stall owner, and Kali Da (Paran Bandopadhyay). Kali Da is a supplier of weapons and ammunition under the guise of running a pharmacy and is someone who deserves his own film.
Well, soon Bob becomes a full-time killer again. Although this time he doesn’t do it for the money, he hopes to bring back his memories by following a familiar routine. He discovers several facts and realizes that he was not a good man before the coma. He believes he can avoid the karmic punishment for his crimes and lead an idyllic life with his newly discovered family. But unfortunately he is forced to pay a high price for the sins he committed in a previous life …
Sujoy Ghosh, who wrote the story, uses memory loss as a great narrative to connect Kahaani with his spiritual sequel. For at least some time, you’ve been convinced that the family around Bob is not real, but actors hired to put him to sleep in a false sense of security so that he can lead them to the deeper secrets of his life as a murderer. Alas, it is not. The family is really real and the film becomes a simple thriller. The writing is not as concise and clear as the original. Too many characters with conflicting agendas appear. For example, Purab’s character Koli was repulsed by Bob on the orders of the king himself, for whom Purab was selling drugs. There is no excuse for the murder. Then we are not told why and when Mary decided to marry Bob after the murder of her husband. The timeline is blurred. There are many such questions that remain unanswered. Hardcore killer suffering from memory loss – this is a gem of the idea, but the script leaves much to be desired.
The film would have failed if it weren’t for the performances. Chitrangada Singh does not make a mistake as an obedient wife who finds happiness again after eight long years. Although she fears her husband’s amnesia, she hopes her love will help her overcome it. She and Abhishek combine so well that they don’t feel like a screen couple working together for the first time. Newcomer Samara Tijori, who happens to be the daughter of Deepak Tijori, is also making a confident debut. She is your typical teenager who struggles with the generational gap, on the one hand, and the stress of learning, on the other. Abhishek Bachchan experimented late to play captivating characters, and his risks reaped rich dividends. He did not aim to eradicate the memory of Sasvata Chatterjee, but he gave his own twist to the much-loved hero. He plays a man who slowly discovers that he is a monster and then reconciles as one. This is a multi-layered image by Abhishek and can be considered one of his best performances to date. The director of the debutant Dia Annapurna Ghosh understands the basics correctly and manages to extract great performances from his cast. She made a promising debut and will surely grow into her profession …

Given how the character, though small on screen, had a big impact on the audience nine years ago, it’s interesting to see how Sujoy has woven a compelling script around Bob. In keeping with the lead role of Vidya Balan, Bob Biswas is also developing in Kolkata. Although in several places this film tends to lag behind, for the most part it keeps you invested in the story. As a debutante, Dia did a good enough job directing this “history killer.”
Chitrangda Singh is wonderful, although she behaves just like Mary, who works to pay rent and maintain her home. She convincingly portrays the diverse emotions of her character and wants to make more films.
With the action of the film in Kolkata, Sujoy, who is also the producer of this one, attracted actors from the East, such as Paran Bandopadhai (West Bengal) and Pabitra Rabha (Assam). Bandopadhyay as Kali Da, who runs a chemistry store that also supplies weapons and ammunition, and also knows how to keep secrets.
Abhishek Bachchan is the best part of Bob Biswas. Although the memory of Saswata Chatterjee, who played the role in Kahaani, has not faded, Abhishek holds the role from his first scene and retains it until the end.
Whether he’s unsure of his identity when he’s discharged from the hospital, his breathlessness after struggling to get rid of the body of an annoying neighbor who shot him impulsively, or even telling his insurance company’s boss he’s talking to a client while taking directions for the next goal, he has all the nuances of the part perfect for T.
It should be noted that when Abhishek gets a challenging role, he does his best not only to portray it convincingly, but also to look perfect for the role. Films like Yuva, Guru and Raavan are proof that when a film or a character requires him to go beyond the envelope, he spares no effort to even rise above the script. An extra half star for his brilliant performance as Bob Biswas.
The soundtrack adds to the story, and Clinton Cerezo’s background intensifies the drama. The camera work of Gayrik Sarkar is beautiful and gives a distinct look to the film.
Although there are a few doors and Bob Biswas is not as brilliant as Kahaani, it is still an interesting thriller to watch.
