Roommates, the family of graduate student Gelani Day, whose body was found in the Illinois River weeks after he was reported missing on Aug. 24, are still searching for answers about his death. According to NBC News, his mother Carmen Bolden does not believe the story of her son that he did something to himself and hired civil rights lawyer Benjamin Crump, who represents George Floyd’s family, to justify them.
During a recent press conference at the Rainbow Push Coalition headquarters in Chicago, Prosecutor Crump asked the FBI to investigate Gelani’s case as a federal hate crime. “We are asking the FBI to make this young black man named Gelani Day a priority, as young white woman Gabby Petito did, because his life is as important as hers,” said lawyer Crump.
He was not the only one to speak at the conference. Carmen, standing next to lawyer Crump and Rev. Jesse Jackson, also made an emotional request that her son’s death be taken seriously. “I’m asking you. I’m begging you. I’m begging you. I need to know what happened to my son,” Carmen said. “I need the FBI to come in and take over. ‘
This is not the first time Carmen has asked the authorities to do more. As we reported in September, Carmen interviewed Newsy, where she compared Gabby’s national coverage to her son’s coverage. She explained that Gelani had not received coverage, although he had been missing for 24 days. Carmen also said that efforts to find him seemed to have waned because everyone knew about Gabby, who was only two days away at the time, and the FBI immediately intervened.
