Apple iPad Mini (2021): Specifications, price, release date

Apple’s smallest tablet finally got its biggest update in almost a decade. The new iPad Mini, unveiled at the company’s virtual hardware event on Tuesday, looks almost unrecognizable compared to its 2019 predecessor. We’re talking thinner bezels, Touch ID, 5G connectivity and even a USB-C port.

Starting at $ 499 for the base model, the sixth-generation iPad Mini will be available in a variety of fun colors, including purple, pink, and what Apple calls “starlight,” which is champagne. If you are in more muted tones, you can also choose the traditional Space Gray. It is currently available for pre-order with full availability from September 24.

But the most notable change is that it looks a lot like an extremely large iPhone. The home button is gone, with the TouchID moving to the power button at the top and the screen occupying almost the entire face of the device.

Mini makeover

If you had to arrange every previous iPad Mini, you’ll notice that apart from some camera changes, the hardware has remained largely intact over the years.

Get into the iPad Mini in 2021, which looks completely redesigned. The front of the Liquid Retina display (with a brightness of 500 nits) has been increased from 7.9 inches (as seen in the 2019 version) to 8.3 inches. Instead of thick frames around, there is now a screen that reaches almost from edge to edge – even from below, as the start button has disappeared.

Apple also updated the cameras with a 12-megapixel sensor on the back, full of a larger aperture (for sharper photos) and an improved flash for better photos in low light. There is a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera on the front, and Apple has added the Center Stage feature, which was previously exclusive to the iPad Pro. The feature automatically keeps you in the frame as you move during a video call.

And yes, this Lightning connector has disappeared in favor of a USB-C port. The new Mini also comes with support for the second generation Apple Pencil. Instead of plugging it into the Lightning port (as with the previous Mini and the first generation Apple Pencil), it automatically connects to the Mini and attaches magnetically to the side where it charges wirelessly.

Speaking of accessories, Apple has released Smart Folio cases for the Mini. Sold separately, you will have a choice between white, black, English lavender, electric orange and dark cherry.
