This Texas family recently added another racehorse to their stables and decided to give it a name worth mentioning! Apparently, the Hatley family were the first African-Americans to race quarter horses in the southern state. Now, with their newest member, Hatley has found a way to always make an impression on the track – to win or lose. They named their horse “Black Life Matters.”
“We called it Black Lives Matter because we knew it was special and we wanted to bring our culture to the sport,” said Kindra Hatley Smith of the family. The shadow room.

Keeundra shared that her father Ke’elronn Hatley and uncle James Hatley Jr. own Black Lives Matter. Horse ownership, training, riding and racing live deep in their family roots. Keeundra’s grandfather was the man who broke the first record mentioned above. He competed from the 60’s to the early 90’s. Now Ke’elronn and James are creating their own heritage.
“Although we faced many obstacles in trying to call it ‘Black Lives Matter’ legally, we knew it would overcome and go down in history,” Kiundra said. “With so much police brutality, we wanted to attract attention and awareness with his name.
The Black Lives Matter horse became a viral sensation overnight. Keeundra shared a video showing the Louisiana Downs horse races. The horse starts almost last before passing the others and winning the race.
Kiyundra tells TSR that Black Lives Matter’s participated in four competitions. The moment in the Louisiana Downs, however, marked the horse’s first victory in the first place. The video shows that Black Lives Matter rises above all other competitors. An event announcer is heard repeating the name of Hatley’s horse over and over again.
Until Friday afternoon, the post was live on TikTok for one day with over 1.3 million views and more than 5,000 comments. Black Lives Matter is scheduled to compete again in April 2022.
