OnePlus 9 for $ 659 and OnePlus 9 Pro for $ 969: These are the most expensive OnePlus phones to date (8/10, WIRED recommends), but they finally enhance a component that has long plagued the company’s predecessors: the camera. The rest of the hardware is excellent as usual, but none of the phones have a real standout feature. OnePlus also promises only three Android OS upgrades and 4 years of security updates.
Sony Xperia 1 III for $ 1298: Sony’s latest Xperia is great for anyone who likes to deal with settings in the camera app or prefers to take photos or videos in manual mode. The camera experience is fun, but still doesn’t yield results that are better than some of our best picks above. Get the highest performance, beautiful 4K OLED 120-Hz screen, powerful stereo speakers, wireless charging and headphone jack! It’s just damn expensive. And 5G here is only under-6, which shouldn’t be on a $ 1,300 phone (5G also doesn’t work for AT&T).
Asus Zenfone 8 for $ 630: If you’re looking for the smallest and most powerful Android phone, look no further than the Zenfone 8. The 5.9-inch screen is small compared to most leading phones – and that’s is flagship, thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 inside. In addition, you get a 120-Hz AMOLED screen, headphone jack and all-day battery life. However, it does not work on Verizon and the camera is OK. Our review has more details.
Samsung Galaxy A52 5G for $ 400: This is not the most exciting phone, but the A52 5G (7/10, WIRED recommended) is reliable. It works pretty well, has a reliable camera system and has a 120-Hz AMOLED screen. It will also receive three OS upgrades and four years of security updates. It often sells for about $ 400.
Motorola One 5G Ace for $ 330: Motorola phones have some of the best battery life and Ace is no different. It has a two-day battery life and you get good performance, 5G connectivity, NFC for contactless payments (rarely on a cheap Moto), plus a large 1080p display. Not surprisingly, the cameras suffer in low light. The Moto G Stylus 5G is also a great option if you want a stylus but no NFC.
Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra for $ 1180 ($ 1,200 at Samsung): This phone (8/10, WIRED recommended) remains one of the largest Android phones with its huge 6.9-inch screen, but it is also only a high-end phone that is equipped with a Bluetooth stylus. Pull the pen from below and you can use it to take notes, draw, take photos from a distance, and more. It also has a beautiful AMOLED screen with a fast refresh rate of 120 Hz, powerful performance, more than a full day of battery life and three great rear cameras. Samsung did not release a new version in 2021. Try not to pay full price.
