Roommates, although the historic uprising in the US Capitol took place in January, are still being talked about nine months later. As new information continues to be leaked today, news of an arrest involving an officer has surfaced. According to CNN, a police officer became the first to be charged in the January 6 uprising in the US Capitol.
According to the indictment, police officer Michael A. Riley is facing charges of obstruction after he allegedly tried to cover up a post he made online in an attempt to help an unknown rebel. Reports say Michael told an unknown person to remove the posts showing they were in the Capitol building that day.
Prosecutors say the day after the uprising, Michael sent a personal Facebook message to the person who posted the selfies and videos that he was in the Capitol during the riot. Reports say that Michael was in the fishing groups on Facebook with this man. The message read: “I am a police officer from the capital who agrees with your political position. Remove the part that you are in the building that is currently being investigated and everyone who was in the building will be charged. I’m just watching! “
In addition, Michael claims that he continued to send messages to the person, saying that he was glad that they left the building unharmed and that more than 50 officers were injured, some quite badly. He hadn’t finished there. Michael told the person to “Get off social media” in mid-January because of dozens of people who were arrested. He even raised potential charges of serious crimes of violence or destruction of property. He also took a step forward, allegedly advising the person to contact the “metropolitan police” and make allegations of violating the law.
The 50-year-old man is currently on administrative leave and was arrested today and appeared in court on a video from a cell. Michael has not yet entered a plea argument and has not been detained pending trial. However, he will be blocked from possessing weapons while awaiting trial.
He is due to stand trial on Tuesday.
