The president of the Jordan brand reveals that he killed a teenager and kept him a secret for years | Celebrities

Chairman of the Jordan Brand Larry Miller reveals a lot about his past.

Before the release of his upcoming autobiography Jump: My Secret Journey From the streets to the boardroomMiller reveals a secret he has been hiding for decades.

In an interview with Sports IllustratedMiller admitted to killing an 18-year-old in 1965 when he was 16. While spending time in prison for the crime, he said he still expressed deep regret and that the shooting “was not the cause at all.”

“I mean, there was no good reason for that to happen. And that’s what I’m really struggling with, and that’s – you know, that’s what I think about every day,” he said. “It’s as if I did this to someone who – there was no reason to do it. And that’s the part that really worries me.”

The shooting happened when Miller and other members of the Cedar Avenue gang from West Philadelphia sought revenge after one of them was killed in a battle by a rival gang. Miller says he shot the first person his colleagues came across – an 18-year-old later identified as Edward White.

“We were all drunk,” Miller told the magazine that night. “I was in a fog. When that came up, I was like, ‘Oh, hell, what did I do?’ “It took me years to figure out the real impact of what I did.”

Miller hopes his story can help young people at risk and people who are imprisoned.

“If I could go back and undo that, I would do absolutely that,” he said. “I can’t. So all I can do is try to do what I can to help other people and try to maybe prevent that from happening to someone else.”

Regarding informing his colleagues from Jordan Brand and the NBA about his past crime, Miller said he was extremely nervous.

“I was definitely nervous to share with him just because I have so much respect and love for MJ,” he told Michael Jordan. But Miller is “amazed at how positive the answer is,” he said, adding that it was a “release.”

Miller co-authored his memoirs with his eldest daughter, Layla and is expected to be released in early 2022. He says he is open to his past to get around any leaks about what he did before the book was published. “It was a really difficult decision for me,” Miller said, “because I’ve been running from it for 40 years. I tried to hide this and I hope people don’t understand about it. “

He has built successful careers with companies such as Campbell Soup, Kraft Foods, Portland Trailblazers, where he was president of the team, Nike, and is now chairman of the Jordan brand, according to SI. But he also experiences migraines and nightmares that stay with him for years and even hospitalize him.

But he also received support for being as open to people as Jordan, the founder of Nike Phil Knight, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and a legendary college basketball coach George Raveling.

“It set me free,” he said. “Now I feel free to be myself.”
