“The FDA is committed to protecting U.S. consumers from products and companies that make illegal claims to treat or prevent diabetes, and we will continue to hold companies accountable by alerting the public to products that put consumers at risk,” she continued.

Unlike FDA-approved medicines, the agency has not assessed whether the unapproved products subject to the warning letters are effective for their intended purpose, what the correct dose may be, how they might interact with FDA-approved medicines or other substances, or whether they have dangerous side effects or other safety concerns.

The FDA has requested responses from companies within 15 working days stating how they will deal with these issues or provide their reasons and supporting information as to why they believe the products do not violate the law. Failure to rectify infringements immediately may result in legal action, including seizure of the product and / or foreclosure.

If the user believes that a product may have caused a reaction or illness, he must immediately stop using the product and contact the healthcare provider. The FDA also encourages health care providers and consumers to report adverse reactions to FDA-regulated products to the agency using MedWatch or the safety reporting portal.
