#Roommates, following various critics who voiced their opinion, and Dave Chapelle himself in response to the controversy, Netflix has finally voiced its position on the award-winning comedian’s latest special show, “The Closer.” According to new reports, Netflix has sent a note to employees confirming that it will not remove The Closer or end its long-standing relationship with Dave Chapelle.
As reported by @HollywoodReporter, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarados sent a note to all current Netflix employees about the dispute with Dave Chapelle – and not only did he make it clear that the special “The Closer” will remain, three Netflix employees ( including trans-worker Terra Field, who publicly criticized Chapelle) were also removed for trying to ruin a company meeting intended only for senior employees.
Sarados’s note read as follows:
“I wanted to follow The Closer – Dave Chappelle’s latest special program – as several of you turned up after QBR and asked what to tell your teams. It never feels good when people hurt, especially our colleagues, so I wanted to give you extra context. You should also be aware that some talents may join third parties by asking us to remove the show in the coming days, which we will not do.
Chapelle is one of the most popular stand-up comedians today and we have a long-standing deal with him. His latest special, “Sticks & Stones”, also controversial, is our most watched, most sticky and most awarded special standup to date. As with our other talents, we work hard to support their creative freedom – although that means there will always be content on Netflix that some people find harmful, such as “Cute,” “365 Days,” “13 reasons why ”or“ My unorthodox life ”.
Several of you have also asked where to put the line of hatred. We do not allow Netflix headlines intended to incite hatred or violence, and we do not believe that “The Closer” crosses that line. However, I recognize that the distinction between commentary and harm is difficult, especially in the stand-up comedy that exists to push the boundaries. Some people think that the art of standing up is evil, but our members enjoy it and it is an important part of offering content.
In terms of our commitment to inclusion, we are working hard to ensure that more people see their lives on screen and that underrepresented communities are not determined by history alone. So we are proud of titles like “Sex Education”, “Young Royals”, “Control Z” and “Disclosure”. Externally, especially in stand-up comedy, freedom of art is obviously a very different standard of speech than we admit internally, as the goals are different: entertaining people versus maintaining a respectful, productive workplace.
