Kim Potter, a former police officer at the Brooklyn Center accused of manslaughter for the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Down Wright during a traffic stop, had his first day of trial on Tuesday.
Held in the same courtroom where Derek Chauvin was found guilty of the murder of George Floyd, the selection of the jury for Potter began. As the jurors were questioned, it was revealed that Potter would defend her.
Asking juror 2, he said that when he first heard about Wright’s death, her reaction was, “How can this happen?”
In response, defense attorney Paul Eng said, “Officer Potter will testify and tell you what he remembers happened,” Eng said. “So you will find out not only from the video, but also from the police officers at the scene and from police officer Potter himself what is happening. I think you’ll be interested in what she has to say.
According to reports, two jurors are on trial. A total of 14 jurors and 2 deputies are needed.
First sat juror №2. As he filled out his questionnaire, he wrote in his questionnaire that he had an unfavorable impression of Blue Lives Matter, explaining to the court that he thought it was less supportive of the police and was “rather opposition to Black Lives Matter. . ”
As previously reported, Kim claims that she intended to use her Taser instead of her pistol when she fatally shot Daunte. The first-degree manslaughter charge also said it endangered the safety of another when death or grievous bodily harm were reasonably foreseeable. The second-degree manslaughter alleges that she acted with culpable negligence and took an unreasonable risk when she knowingly risked death or grievous bodily harm with a firearm.
Kim expects a maximum sentence of 15 years for first-degree manslaughter and a maximum sentence of 10 years for second-degree manslaughter. However, the state
sentencing guidelines require less. The Wright family does not appear to be excited about the accusation.
Wright’s family had previously said they were “obviously disappointed” that the charges did not correspond to murder.
